Vintage and Seventies style equal family fun, old photos and dress-ups with sister – the louder, the better.
First of all, what’s a tad unusual for a photo shoot – as this one was for me – can be a perfectly normal family moment. When I visit my sister who rented this huge, old ballroom-style townhouse apartment you could easily do skateboarding, rollerblading in, or cycling, for that matter, we usually disappear into her wardrobe and the hours fly by. As she has the space for it, I’m going to risk saying she’s an even bigger vintage hoarder than I am when it comes to clothing and accessories. Definitely bigger if we count her similar enthusiasm in collecting jewellery, toys, vehicle models and who knows what else. Anyway, I’ve been dreaming about shooting with her for most of my life.
Sooo, I was more than gutted to learn she would not be part of this session, the fickle little bastard. I’ve been dying to have a vintage photoshoot with her for ages. Well, who knows, it may happen yet. No need to say, the butterfly print blouse is from her collection, as is the uber-girlie pink bicycle. It’s a shame her hyperactive black cat who worked hard all day meticulously inspecting clothes and equipment, squeezing into bags and jumping on everyone, never actually made it onto the pics – next time I won’t let either her or her mom chicken out.
That Seventies look: get it right
I tagged the look as Seventies dress-up because it contains key period style elements but it’s not meant to be a costume party outfit. The best style hack is balance: when you’re wearing statement pieces like a floppy hat and a retro blouse with a huge cuff, you can always add ripped jeans and studded accessories for a street or party worthy finish.
